Business Models You Can Build
CSD Card Manufacturer
Build WPD-CSD cards as Computational Storage products. Target: enterprise customers with data-heavy workloads (databases, analytics, ML training). Estimated selling price: -25,000 per card. Estimated cost: -5,000 in BOM + assembly.
ACCEL Card Manufacturer
Build WPD-ACCEL cards as GPU-less ML accelerators. Target: edge inference, embedded systems, low-power ML. Estimated selling price: -15,000 per card. Estimated cost: -4,000.
Custom Card House
Design custom WPD variants for OEMs (rugged, aerospace, industrial). Estimated pricing: -500,000 per variant NRE + per-unit royalty.
Driver Licensing
Develop and sign drivers, license to other card makers. Estimated pricing: -100 per shipped card (royalty model) or -500k perpetual license.
Enterprise Integration
Sell complete WPD solutions (card + software stack + support contract) to enterprises. Estimated pricing: -500,000 per deployment.
Scope Limits
- No sub-license: End customers must license through you or directly from Chris (that requires WPD-OEM-ENGPKG)
- Attribution required: Drivers must show WritePhi origin (Windows WHCP requires this)
- USA-only sales: International requires special licensing
- No military/weapons: Explicit written consent required
Your Responsibilities
- Manufacturing: PCB fab (Sanmina/TTM), assembly (contract EMS or in-house), QC
- Firmware: Adapt to your card variant, tune for your workload
- Drivers: Develop, test with Windows HLK, submit to WHCP
- Certification: FCC Part 15 Class B, PCI-SIG compliance, WHCP for drivers
- Support: Level-1/2/3 customer support (you build it)
- Warranty: Standard commercial terms (typically 1-3 years); RMA process
Timeline to Revenue
- First shippable card: 5-8 months
- First signed driver: 4-8 months
- First enterprise deal: 8-12 months from purchase
Why ?
WPD is a more sophisticated product than base WritePhi (Windows drivers + PCIe 5.0 + dual-persona architecture). Higher entry price reflects higher revenue potential (enterprise pricing vs maker pricing).
Upgrade Path
- WPD-BUILDHELP : Commercial license + 40 hours of Chris's time
- WPD-OEM-ENGPKG : Full acquisition, you become the WPD vendor
Portfolio conversation — WritePhi Devices (Project 58) + WritePhi (Project 57)
WPD does not exist in isolation. It is the Windows host deployment half of the same portfolio conversation that begins in WritePhi (Project 57). Project 57's kitchen-table pipeline — Writer, Blank, Dicer, PKG socket-BGA, Chassis bed, and reference IC library — fabricates the M-grade and H-grade WritePhi dies that this card's four pinned sockets accept. The V2 package blueprint here is an explicit production-scale extension of 57's PKG plus additional cut marks and tabs that WRITEPHI-DICER executes in the same dicing pass.
If you are buying on this page, you are in the run chapter: PCIe card reference designs, persona firmware, and Windows driver plans. Makers who need to produce the dies themselves start in the make chapter — browse WritePhi (Project 57). Either half stands alone for study or commercial licensing; both halves together narrate bench fabrication through installed Windows compute.
