RESPECT THE TOOL

An Essay on Blame, Fate, and Why Artificial Intelligence Needs Insurance

I. The Cut

Every man who has ever held a blade knows the moment. The moment your mind wanders. The moment you stop respecting what's in your hand. You're slicing through drywall, peeling wire, cutting rope — and then the knife reminds you what it is. It opens your skin like a letter. And you stand there, blood running down your knuckle, and you don't blame the knife.

You blame yourself.

Because you knew. You knew the edge was sharp. You knew to keep your fingers clear. You knew the angle, the pressure, the physics. And you got lazy. You got comfortable. You lost respect for the tool — and the tool collected its tax.

This is the covenant between a man and his instruments. A table saw doesn't care about your weekend plans. A circular blade doesn't know your daughter's birthday is Saturday. The tool has one job and it does it without mercy, without memory, without malice. Your job is to respect that. When you don't, the scar is your receipt.

And honestly? That's fair. That's the deal. You picked up the tool. You knew what it could do. The cut is on you.

II. The Catalog of Sharp Things

I've spent my life building sharp things.

Since 2017, I've filed and developed over a thousand inventions. Patent applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office going back to application 62/393,084 filed September 11, 2016, and continuing through 19/177,547 filed April 12, 2025. Design patents. Utility patents. Provisional filings. Continuations. The works.

Invention #1: Light-triggered semiconductor microchips using colored laser reflections for process control — nanophotonics, the foundation of the Light Age.
Invention #100: Wireless machine adapters and personal wireless computing with routers — eliminating wires through personal hardware clouds.

I've engineered magnetic propulsion engines, electromagnetic torque converters, hybrid fuel economy transmissions, myriad nano-layer chip architectures, solid state threading, and software-driven CPUs.

I've conceived encrypted phone services — separate systems for government, military, and public use. I've designed phone distress chips that send SOS signals. Emergency apps for people without internet connections. Domestic abuse counseling apps. Barcode-driven medical and legal data systems.

Every single one of these is a tool.

And every tool — from a colored laser microchip to a drone warfare controller to an electromagnetic jet propulsion engine — demands respect. Every tool can cut.

But here is where the essay turns.

III. The Bus

Because there is a person who never even saw that bus coming.

You can respect every tool you've ever touched. You can read every manual. You can keep your fingers behind the guard, your eyes on the blade, your mind on the work. You can do everything right — and a city bus runs a red light and changes the rest of your life in a quarter-second.

That person didn't pick up a tool. They didn't sign a covenant. They were walking to the store. They were crossing at the light. They were doing nothing wrong and everything right and the bus came anyway.

This is the other side of the equation. The one we don't like to talk about. Because if every cut is your own fault, then what do we do with the cuts that aren't? What do we do with the harm that arrives uninvited, unsigned, and unearned?

We insure against it.

That's what insurance is. Insurance exists in the gap between accountability and fate. It doesn't fix what happened — it acknowledges that some things happen TO you, not BECAUSE of you. And it says: when the bus comes, someone will help you stand back up.

IV. The Robot in the Intersection

Now make the bus a robot.

"To prove that artificial intelligence is unsecured and dangerous, we can look at the responsibility of consequences first and foremost — in pre-examination routines of: what if my car gets hit by a robot? Or what if my kid gets run over by a robot? What happens to the operator and owner of either — or, in any circumstance — and to know that there are and will be rules and lawsuits."

I wrote that eight years ago. Before ChatGPT. Before autonomous vehicles killed their first pedestrians. Before deepfakes ruined their first reputations. Before AI-generated code shipped its first vulnerability into production. Before any of the things that are now happening every single day.

And what I said then is what I'm saying now: the question was never IF artificial intelligence would hurt someone. The question was always WHO PAYS WHEN IT DOES.

Because AI is the ultimate bus. It's the sharp thing you never picked up. It's the blade someone else is holding, pointed in your direction, operated by an algorithm you never agreed to, trained on data you never consented to give, and deployed in a world where you're just trying to cross the street.

You didn't lose respect for the tool. You never had the tool. The tool has you.

V. The Foresight Portfolio

I didn't just predict this problem. I built a portfolio around solving it.

Invention #1094: A web-bot network of data applications searching for the meaning of artificial intelligence — pro and con. Automated systems studying THEMSELVES, evaluating their own risks, before they're deployed into lives that can't be rebooted.
Invention #1095: The negative conclusion foresight of AI research — the effects on everyday life for humans and the difference between "state of the art" marketing language and the actual consequences of self-driving cars, automated decisions, and algorithmic control.

These weren't science fiction pitches. These were filed with the USPTO. Documented, timestamped, and submitted as serious intellectual property. Because foresight isn't paranoia — foresight is engineering.

When you see a table saw, you install a blade guard. When you see artificial intelligence entering every vehicle, every hospital, every courtroom, every hiring decision, and every financial transaction on Earth — you install insurance.

VI. The Case for AI Insurance

Here is the product. Here is what the world needs and does not yet have in any meaningful, universal form:

AI INSURANCE.

Not cybersecurity insurance — that covers data breaches. Not product liability insurance — that covers manufacturing defects. AI insurance covers the gap. The new gap. The gap between the human who did nothing wrong and the machine that did something catastrophic.

Consider the scenarios:

  • The Pedestrian: A self-driving vehicle strikes a pedestrian. The pedestrian didn't choose to interact with that AI. They were crossing the street. Who pays for their medical bills? Their lost wages? Their trauma?
  • The Candidate: An AI hiring system rejects a qualified candidate based on biased training data. The candidate never knew AI was involved. They thought a human read their resume. Who compensates their lost opportunity?
  • The Patient: An AI-generated medical diagnosis is wrong. The patient trusted their doctor. The doctor trusted the software. The software was trained on incomplete data. Who is liable?
  • The Target: An AI-controlled drone — from hover drones with land-air-sea capabilities (Invention #1135) to VR military-grade controllers (Invention #1127) to self-destructing platforms (Invention #1128) — makes a targeting error. Who bears that weight?

In every one of these cases, the victim is the person who never saw the bus coming. They didn't pick up the tool. They didn't lose respect for the blade. The blade came to them.

AI insurance says: we anticipated this. We filed for this. We built a framework so that when the inevitable happens, there is a structure of accountability, a pool of resources, and a mechanism for making people whole again.

VII. The Inventor's Obligation

I've built tools my entire adult life. I hold patent applications spanning nanophotonics, semiconductor architecture, magnetic propulsion, telecommunications infrastructure, military defense systems, medical data instruments, energy alternatives, and artificial intelligence foresight.

I say this not to boast. I say this because if you build sharp things, you have an obligation to also build the guard. You have an obligation to think about who gets cut when the tool is out of your hands.

The table saw inventor also invented the blade guard. The car manufacturer also created the seatbelt. The chemist who understood combustion also understood the fire extinguisher.

And the inventor who documents a thousand technologies — from light-trigger semiconductors to encrypted government communications to drone warfare systems to AI liability frameworks — has an obligation to say:

These tools will cut.
Some cuts will be earned.
Some will not.
For the ones that are not — there must be insurance.

VIII. The Final Cut

So here we are. Two types of cuts. Two types of people.

The first picked up the tool, got comfortable, lost respect, and bled for it. That's accountability. That's the covenant. That's the scar that teaches you to pay attention.

The second was standing on the sidewalk. They were living their life. They never signed up for the experiment. And something they couldn't see, couldn't understand, and couldn't stop — hit them anyway.

For the first person, the lesson is clear: respect the tool.

For the second person, the lesson is different. The lesson is that someone, somewhere, should have seen the bus coming. Someone should have filed the paperwork. Someone should have built the framework. Someone should have said: this is going to happen, and when it does, there needs to be a net.

I filed that paperwork.

The framework is called AI Insurance.
And the bus is already on the road.
