The Redaction Pen package is a complete hardware-engineering vault containing three custom storage and compute projects, built from the ground up by a single inventor. Every project targets real, manufacturable hardware — KiCad schematics, JLCPCB-ready bills of materials, impedance-controlled PCB layout guidelines, mechanical enclosure specifications, FPGA gateware in Python (LiteX/Migen), RISC-V firmware in C, a Linux PCIe kernel driver, and a userspace control tool. The package spans 56 files and over 6,000 lines of design documentation, source code, and engineering notes.
The three sub-projects form a coherent technology stack: from a pocket-sized USB-C encrypted vault, through a custom SATA SSD for enterprise hot-swap server bays, to a full PCIe accelerator card with eight RISC-V cores and a terabyte of on-board persistent storage. All three share a common architectural thread — managed NAND (eMMC) as the storage substrate, eliminating the need for custom flash-translation-layer firmware.

The project reduces to pure hardware design: a bridge chip translates between the SATA edge connector and the eMMC managed-NAND chip, whose internal controller handles the entire flash translation layer.

Eight RISC-V soft cores running inside a Lattice ECP5-85F FPGA, backed by 1 GB of DDR3 working memory, connected to the host via PCIe Gen 2 ×4, with four eMMC chips providing a terabyte of on-board storage. The spiritual successor to the Xeon Phi 3120A — except this one has its own SSD inside, open-source tooling, and you designed it yourself.
